It defines direct mail as “unsolicited commercial literature sent to prospective customers through the post”. Is it unsolicited? Sure. But that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t work.
But exactly how effective is it? Let’s have a look at the numbers. These are from a study that compared the effectiveness of direct mail vs digital media (emails and online ads).
  • Direct mail is far easier to understand and more memorable than digital media. It requires 21% less cognitive effort to process than digital media.
  • It’s more persuasive than digital media. The motivation score of direct mail was 20% higher than that of digital media. This makes it much more likely to drive future behavior.
  • It’s better at building your brand. When asked to cite the brand of an advertisement they had just seen, participants’ recall was 70% higher if they were exposed to a direct mail piece.
The numbers speak for themselves, don’t they? Direct mail is an effective marketing tool, and you shouldn’t count it out just yet.

The future of direct mail is bright

Don’t get us wrong. We’re not here to knock digital channels. Email marketing is awesome, and it can do magic. But you want to rule the marketing kingdom, don’t you? Then take it up a level. Consider engaging with your customers the old-school way. You can surprise them with a letter for their birthday, or wish them happy holidays with a postcard. They will appreciate the extra effort.
